Usually, after IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) or IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), your fertility doctor will let you know that you won't be able to take a pregnancy test for about two weeks. Two weeks—just 14 days—can seem like a lifetime when you are in the middle of fertility treatment and constantly swing from hope to fear.

The emotional rollercoaster involved with the wait can be all-out exhausting. Even worse, at a time when getting stressed is not good for the goal, you do have to be careful. So, how do you handle the wait after IUI or IVF? Here are a few tips to help you out.

Make Use of Healthy Distractions

Distractions can be a good way to stay focused on the present instead of fertility treatment and pass the time. Try to work in mini-projects or even something from your bucket list you've always wanted to do. For example:

  • Finally try that new recipe you've been meaning to make

  • Organize your closet, your pantry, etcetera

  • Learn a new skill, like knitting or painting

Get Some Exercise (Within Reason)

Exercise offers a lot to you both physiologically and psychologically. As long as your overseeing doctor approves, make a point to get out of the house, take a walk or go for a short hike in nature. Be sure to avoid strenuous activities and swimming

Create Something to Look Forward To

Make some plans for beyond results day. It could be something as simple as a day trip to a neighboring town or something more exciting like a weekend getaway out of state to a place you've never been. Having something to look forward to can give you a reason to keep going if the treatment doesn't work and help you focus on something other than the results.

Work On Your Inner Voice and Self-Shaming

If the treatment is not successful, shaming yourself is almost a knee-jerk reaction. However, you can consciously work on reminding yourself that whatever happens, you are not to blame. Avoid telling yourself things like "It's my fault I can't conceive" or "My body is dysfunctional." Instead, remind yourself with positive reinforcements by telling yourself you are trying your best or your body is trying its best.

Make Arrangements for Results Day

Results day can bring along intense emotions, whether the treatment is successful or not. If you get a positive result, you can sometimes feel like you've been holding your breath for two weeks straight and may feel just the same until your next appointment. Go ahead and make plans for that day. You may consider taking the day off from work or taking care of daily responsibilities in advance. Ask a close friend or your partner to spend the day with you or be available if you need help coping.

A Final Tip: Consider a Talk with Your Therapist

If you are having an especially difficult time during your wait after IVF or IUI, schedule an appointment to have a session with your reproductive therapist. Sometimes, it can help to have an open conversation about your thoughts and emotions about fertility at this emotionally tumultuous time.
